2019 Project call applications under review

The 1st call for Helmholtz AI projects successfully closed on January 17 with more than 50 submissions!

55 project proposals have been submitted in response to Helmholtz AI’s first call for ‘high risk, high gain’ collaborative research projects in applied machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI). This call, which opened in November 2019 and is funded by the Helmholtz Association's Initiative and Networking Fund (INF), offers up to 200k€ to AI/ML projects that prize learning from (fast) failure over incremental success.

“We are delighted by the very positive response to the call and the number of proposals submitted” says Angela Jurik-Zeiller, science manager at Helmholtz AI. “Besides, it is particularly encouraging that participation went beyond research field borders, thus fulfilling our goal of fostering cross-field and cross-centre collaboration” she remarks.

Projects must be completed within a maximum of three years and have the potential to quickly spawn larger follow-up projects. After careful evaluation by an external expert committee, funding will be allocated to the successful proposals, most likely by the end of April 2020.
