Together with NVIDIA and the OpenACC organization, Helmholtz will host a hybrid Open Hackathon taking place on six days in total: on April 8 and 15 (online), and on April 23-26 (in-person in Görlitz). 

Open Hackathons are multi-day, intensive hands-on events designed to help computational scientists and researchers port, accelerate and optimize their applications on a variety of data center architectures including CPUs and GPUs. The event pairs participants with dedicated mentors experienced in programming and targeted application areas to realize performance gains and speedups using a variety of programming models, libraries, and tools.

Attendance and mentoring are free of charge (but participants have to cover their travel expenses to Görlitz). The Jülich HPC Systems (JURECA-DC, JUWELS Booster) will be used for the hackathon.

Fancy using High Performance Computing machines for AI? Fancy learning how to run your code one of Europe's fastest computers JUWELS Booster at FZJ?

In this workshop, we will guide you through the first steps of using the supercomputer machines for your own AI application. This workshop should be tailored to your needs - and our team will guide you through questions like:

• How do I get access to the machines? 
• How do I use the pre-installed, optimized software?
• How can I run my own code?
• How can I store data so I can access it fast in training?
• How can parallelize my training and use more than one GPU?

The Incubator Summer Academy is open to all PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in the Helmholtz Association. In addition, a small number of seats in our workshops are reserved for Master students, doctoral researchers and postdocs from other research institutions and universities.

The Helmholtz AI consultant team for Earth and Environment, located at DKRZ/Hereon, will visit KIT and talk about their experience and what they can offer to all Helmholtz researchers. Consulting services are free of charge for researchers of all Helmholtz centers.

The roadshow will start with an introductory seminar summarising the work of the AI consultant team for Earth and Environment and giving examples of research projects they have collaborated on. Given the wide range of relevant research activities at KIT, this includes cases from atmospheric sciences and Earth observation to geological modelling. Following the introduction, there will be ample time for “walk-in consulting slots” to get individual feedback from the AI consultants about your ML challenges.

This event, organized by the Interdisciplinary Institutes for Artificial Intelligence (3IA), MIAI (Grenoble), 3IA Côte d’Azur (Nice) and PR[AI]RIE (Paris), together with the Health Data Hub, will take place at PariSanté Campus, Paris and online.

The 2023 AI4Health Summer School will cover the latest advances in the field of AI applied to health. It will start with three days of plenary sessions with lectures and use cases, led by international speakers, accessible on site and online. They will be followed by two days of hands-on practical sessions, led by experts, for the on-site participants only. A poster session is also scheduled, for the on-site participants only, with a prize of 500€ for the best poster chosen by the AI4Health scientific committee.

The Helmholtz AI consultants from the research field Earth & Environment from German climate computing centre (DKRZ) and Hereon are organizing a minisymposium on "Implementation and Validation of Hybrid Earth System and Machine Learning Models" at the PASC23 conference.The PASC Conference, among others things, promotes the exchange of knowledge in scientific computing and computational science through minisymposiums that will be held with the aim to showcase research related to domain science, applied mathematics, computer science and software engineering. 

This minisymposium is co-organized with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and will gather international experts to discuss current and emerging activities in the areas of ML-based model parameterization, coupling of Fortran-based Earth system model, and Python-based ML components as well as their deployment on high performance computing and scientific validation.

Data centers and large AI models use massive amounts of energy, especially at the training and inference stages. Lowering energy-consumption is a critical step for efficient integration of ML models in many fields. Have you ever attempted cutting down energy usage? • Teams: Participants will be divided into teams of three to tackle model development for one of two possible use-cases (one in research field health & one in energy). Premade teams are of course allowed!
• Challenge: Build and optimize a model while using as little energy as possible

We are inviting all AI enthusiasts and AI researchers to join the Helmholtz AI conference 2023 on 12-14 June 2023 in Hamburg hosted at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchroton (DESY) and at the Kuppel-Hamburg. Our two and a half-day hybrid event will bring together method and domain specialists with a shared interest in Artificial Intelligence for discussing latest research results and use cases in applied AI/ML and for expanding your network.

Team applications for the Helmholtz GPU Hackathon 2023 are open now!

Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), and the Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy (HIDA) together with NVIDIA and OpenACC will co-organize the Helmholtz GPU Hackathon 2023.

GPU Hackathons provide exciting opportunities for scientists to accelerate their AI or HPC research under the guidance of expert mentors from national laboratories, universities and industry leaders in a collaborative environment.

What happens at such a GPU Hackathon?

Teams of about 3-6 people apply to work on porting (parts of) their code onto the GPU or refining an already existing GPU implementation. Teams can use almost any programming model to do so, provided we find mentors for support. Each team will receive two mentors to help in the process. All of this is free of charge (but you have to cover your team’s travel expenses to Jülich). We will be using the JUWELS Booster system or even an early access system for the upcoming exascale system at Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC). A maximum of ten teams can be accepted for the event.

Prerequisites and how to apply?

• Teams are expected to be fluent with the code or project they bring to the event and motivated to make progress during the hackathon. 
• A minimum of 3 team members must participate throughout the entire event. Lack of complete participation will result in the entire team being excused.

Helmholtz Enterprise (HE) is the internal program for spin-offs from the Helmholtz Association. The overall purpose of the program is to support scientists to work entrepreneurial and start a well-thought-out business. HE consists of two independent modules. Applications for each module are independent of each other.

• The Field Study Fellowship finances a budget for personnel and material costs for the Helmholtz centers or their institutes in order to identify customer needs through interviews and market research.
• The Spin-off Program finances the establishment of start-up teams working at the center and the implementation of start-up projects. The Spin-off Program also finances externally found team members if required and the expansion of start-up competencies of the internal team, e.g. by participating in entrepreneurship training.

The national center of excellence ML4Earth together with Helmholtz AI and the international future lab AI4EO invites you to participate in the Explainable Artificial Intelligence (xAI) Workshop.

In the last two years, Helmholtz AI has been formed in the Helmholtz Data Science Incubator to foster the application of AI methods in all scientific disciplines. The AI consultant teams cordially invite you to a Helmholtz AI on-site consulting on November 2 and 3, 2022.

The AI consultant teams support scientists not only on a conceptual level, but can also provide operative support, implementation, and evaluation.

What can you expect?

On November 2 at 2 pm, during a presentation in the central library at FZJ, the Helmholtz AI consultants will introduce themselves, their offer, and present recent success stories from research collaborations. The introductory section will be followed by a general question and answer session.

In addition, time slots for walk-in consultings in smaller rounds are reserved. In these 1-on-1 sessions, scientists from FZJ can engage in discussion on how Helmholtz AI, the Helmholtz AI consultants, and AI methods, in general, can support and advance their research.

Academy (HIDA) and Helmholtz Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Unit (Helmholtz AI) have teamed up to create an exciting data challenge at the Incubator Summer Academy - From Zero to Hero.

Join us and find elegant domain transfer solutions for blood-cell classification.

Manual classification of blood cells is a tedious, but important task, for instance to diagnose diseases such as anemia or leukemia. Machine learning makes it easier, but algorithms that work on one set of images might not work on another. Join this challenge and find a solution that may contribute to making clinicians lives easier.

We’ll kick off on 14 September with an introduction to the challenge and end with our award ceremony on 23 September. A team of experts will mentor you throughout the challenge where you’ll be working on your own time. Computing resources are available via HAICORE.

The minisymposium "Towards ESM-ML Hybrids with Practical Workflows and Model Integration" will take place at the PASC22 Conference, June 27-29, in Basel (https://pasc22.pasc-conference.org/).

A promising application area for Machine Learning (ML) in the domain of Earth System Modeling (ESM) and Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) revolves around scalable solutions that embed ML in running ESM/NWP code. For example, in order to ensure the long-term stability of ML models that can substitute existing model parameterizations, it may be required to tune an ML model against a live numerical model, in addition to the challenge of getting initial training data extracted from the model at possibly high spatial and temporal resolutions in the first place. Such setups are much more complex than offline training settings in terms of software integration and CPU-GPU data exchange in an HPC setup. The standard ML workflows will generate models for inference whose utility is currently limited to the Python ecosystem. Exporting them to work with ESMs in Fortran or C environments results in cumbersome workflows. Tackling such challenges is of key value to research and development efforts that aim to build ESM-ML hybrids. To encourage collaboration and formulation of best practices, the minisymposium will bring together ESM and ML developers, HPC experts as well as software engineering expertise revolving around building Python/Fortran/C bridges, and foster exchange with other application domains.

The minisymposium will feature talks by Caroline Arnold (DKRZ)/Shivani Sharma (Hereon), Noah Brenowitz (Allen AI) and Sam Partee (HPE).

Featuring Applications from Health & Energy

This is the first hackathon of this kind organized by the Incubator platforms Helmholtz Imaging Platform (HIP), Helmholtz Information & Data Science School for Health (HIDSS4Health), Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC), Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy (HIDA) and Helmholtz AI.

This Hackathon is targeting advanced AI-researchers with experience in model development, training and optimization. Participants will join into teams of three to tackle model development for two use-cases, one from the research field of health and one from the research field of energy. The challenge is finding and optimizing a model and its training to minimize energy consumption. The winning team and runner-ups of each use-case will be awarded with awesome prizes, kindly sponsored by Lenovo. Further details can be found here.

Many in the ML community wish to take action on climate change, but are unsure of the pathways through which they can have the most impact. This workshop highlights work that demonstrates that ML can be an invaluable tool in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and in helping society adapt to the effects of climate change. Climate change is a complex problem, for which action takes many forms - from theoretical advances to deployment of new technology. Many of these actions represent high-impact opportunities for real-world change, and are simultaneously interesting research problems.

This workshop is part of a series (NeurIPS 2020, ICLR 2020, NeurIPS 2019, ICML 2019) and takes place at the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), one of the premier conferences on machine learning. For this iteration of the workshop, the keynote talks and panel discussions will be particularly focused on connections to the Paris Agreement and reaching net-zero emission targets, but submitted papers may be on any topic of relevance to climate change and machine learning. The workshop is open to the public; it is not necessary to submit a paper to the workshop in order to attend.

DIVE INTO MACHINE LEARNING

Building on the great response last year, the Virtual ML Summer School will be offered again in 2021. The aim is to provide an introductory course in basic techniques and concepts of supervised machine learning (ML), which has become a central part of modern data analysis.

The course is constructed holistically and as self-contained as possible, in order to cover most relevant areas of supervised ML. While the introductory parts are more aimed at a practical and operational understanding of the covered algorithms and models, we also include sound theoretical foundations and proofs in more advanced sections in order to teach ML theory as self-contained and precise as possible.

To overcome limitations in computing and data analytics related to Earth System science, the uptake of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methodologies is currently being explored. Multiple initiatives are now emerging to tackle open challenges such as subscale parametrization, detection of patterns and in-situ analysis, adoption of ML for alternative process models, or dedicated fast prediction systems to address specific end-user needs.

Following the first workshop held in February 2020, this second workshop will provide an update on the state of the art in applying and extending AI/ML techniques in topics relevant to Earth System science, from integrating ML with models to deriving new insights from observational data, to extending AI/ML to impact models and approaches. We call for contributions to the sessions, offering presentation and lightning talk slots for those interested in submitting an abstract. Contributions are welcome from all participants, from updates on ongoing research activities and future plans to technical insights worthwhile to share.

Access to computing resources is key for the Helmholtz AI community to accelerate innovative AI applications. Therefore, the “Helmholtz AI computing resources” (HAICORE) was initiated at the end of 2019 as a one-off measure within the framework of the Helmholtz Incubator. HAICORE comprises Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres funding of 2.5 million euro, mainly for GPU hardware, which is implemented at the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The resources should be open to the entire AI community within the Helmholtz Association.

This workshop is designed to guide you through the first steps of using supercomputing machines for your own AI application. We will try to get your code and workflow up and running, and aim to make getting started on a supercomputer as smooth as possible. After this course, you will not only be ready to use HAICORE, but you will have taken the first step to unlocking compute resources at the largest scale with a compute time application at the Gauss Supercomputing Center. 

The workshop will be held in a small group size to ensure that your questions will be addressed. Please let us know what topics you are interested in and we will try to adjust.

GPU Hackathons are five day intensive hands-on events designed to help computational scientists port their applications to GPUs using libraries, OpenACC, CUDA and other tools by pairing participants with dedicated mentors experienced in GPU programming and development. Representing distinguished scholars and preeminent institutions around the world, these teams of mentors and attendees work together to realize performance gains and speedups by taking advantage of parallel programming on GPUs.

A collection of GPU lectures, tutorials, and labs are available for all participants at no fee.

This event is jointly organized by Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) in association with the Helmholtz Federated IT Services Software Cluster (HIFIS).

DIVE INTO MACHINE LEARNING

Core program of the Virtual ML Summer School 2020 is an introductory course to fundamental techniques and concepts of supervised machine learning (ML), which has become a central part of modern data analysis.
In particular non-linear and non-parametric methods have been used successfully in uncovering complex patterns and relationships by computer scientists and statisticians.

Programme

The focus of the course is to give a basic understanding of the different algorithms, models and concepts while explaining the necessary mathematical foundation.

Participants will acquire theoretical as well as practical competencies regarding some fundamental models of learning from data. Also participants will be enabled to conduct a data analysis project, including understanding and interpreting the data, in order to critically judge the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods.

Virtual meetings and group work (except 23 Sep) take place from 1-4:30pm.

You are required to work through course materials (videos, quizzes, online exercises) in prepartion for the live sessions by yourself and at your own pace. The live sessions will be used to put the concepts you learned about into practice.

You will have access to the course materials a couple of weeks prior to the starting date. It is up to you if you prepare topics in the mornings before each session in the afternoon or in the weeks before the course starts.

Prerequisites

The course is targeted at ML beginners with a basic, university level, education in maths and statistics:

• Basic linear algebra: vectors, matrices, determinants
• Simple calculus: derivatives, integrals, gradients
• Some probability theory: probability, random variables, distributions
• Basic statistics knowledge: descriptive statistics, estimators.
  (Linear) modelling from a statistics perspective will help, but is not required.
• Working knowledge of R
